What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way for consumers to share a connection with the growers of their food. By purchasing a share, you are entering into a commitment to support your grower for one season, through the best of times, and the worst of times.
What does that mean, exactly?
Every growing season is different. Some years are great for some crops but poor for others. Some years we have drought. We could have hail. We could have bumper crops! While market gardening certainly takes a great deal of skill and knowledge, there is always a substantial element of uncertainty because our success depends greatly on the weather. By supporting us through a CSA, you are connecting yourself to these natural elements. For example, if extreme heat waves come in early summer causing all the spinach to bolt, then together, we say goodbye to spinach for a while. However, if that same early heat helps the tomatoes to ripen earlier, you see the benefits of that! You win some, you lose some.
What should I expect?
Each week’s box will be a different assortment of fresh veggies offering you a variety of things to eat. For a CSA share to work, you should be eager and excited to eat a diversity of vegetables, and be willing to occasionally try things you might not normally buy at Stupid-store. (My kids love that one..)
How does it work?
Every Wednesday, beginning mid-June, you pick up your veggie box from your chosen pick-up location between 3 - 6 PM. Pick up locations in Whitemouth, Dugald, and three locations in Winnipeg: St Boniface, Wolseley/West Broadway, and Westwood.
So, how do I join?
Fill out the form indicating which share you’d like and your chosen pickup location!
We’ll need a $150 deposit to reserve your spot, with the balance due April 1.
In our gardens, our top priority is to maintain and increase the health of our soils.
Healthy soil is much more than dirt. It is home to millions of microorganisms, and billions of fungi, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, and many other organisms, living symbiotically with the plants, together forming what is known as the Soil Food Web.
The best way to maintain good soil health is to avoid compaction. When soil is compressed from heavy traffic, especially from machinery, there is no oxygen left in the soil, which is essential to the microorganisms, just as it is to you and me. We do all of our garden work with hand tools, as this allows us to maintain permanent growing beds which are never compacted. In addition, we aim for a no-till method, as tillage kills much of the life in the soil. Occasionally, light tilling is used to mix in cover crops or to prepare new ground for planting.
We always use organic methods in our gardens - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides.
We use organic compost to provide fertility.
